In a world obsessed with the alignment of the stars and planets, where horoscopes and constellations often become the definition of one’s personality, the question, “What is Your Sign?” stands prominent. The usual responses originate in Babylonian astrology; however, a different kind of "sign" recently took centre stage in the community of Seaforth, located in the parish of St. Thomas, Jamaica. This was not the cosmic sign but rather a physical sign that represents transformative power of unity, dedication, and consistent commitment throughout the community.
On August 5, 2023, the Seaforth Seventh-day Adventist church unveiled its new church sign, resplendent of Adventist identity and points to the Saviour, Jesus Christ. Akin to a philosophical riddle, this act is one filled with symbolism and invites us to explore the different spheres that surround it.

In the vicinity of Seaforth, the renowned church stands as a beacon of hope for the residents. However, the passage of time had left its mark on the church's wall, including its once-prominent sign. The church leaders and members knew that it was time for a change – a change that not only involved the physical appearance, but also symbolizes a fresh chapter for the congregation. As with all projects, the metamorphosis of the church went beyond the physical change. The dedication, the behind-the-scenes work, the decisions made all played a vital role for the initiative to be successful. Two such events that stood out were the workdays that were held on July 16, 2023 and July 23, 2023. Both days, work started at 8:30 a.m. were more than just labour sessions – they were opportunities for the church members to bond, share stories, and engage in meaningful conversations. The walls, once weathered and decayed by age, now radiate vibrancy, a visual representation of the commitment and harmony at the core of this church community.
A community member, Rushane Harris, who had often passed by the church and witnessed the gradual deterioration of the church's perimeter wall, decided to join the members on both of the special workdays. He joyfully offered his time, skill and energy to the removal of debris, power-washing the walls, and the painting endeavour. He was moved by this straightforward demonstration of solidarity and common purpose, and he began attending church every Sabbath as a result. No longer a passive observer, he became an active participant in the congregation's journey. In one conversation with the pastor, Rushane exclaimed, “This is now my church!”

Beyond mere aesthetics, the transformation reflects the remarkable synergy and collaboration between leaders and members. The collective effort poured into painting the walls echoes the shared commitment to preserving the church's legacy while embracing change. This initiative is a poignant reminder that the church is a place where hopes, dreams, commitment, unity and where Biblical truth is spoken come together rather than merely being a building.
The appointment of the new pastor, Lascelles Morris, on July 1, 2023 who was present on both workdays, represents the embodiment of continuity and progression. He serves as a testament of the church's readiness to embark on new journeys while remaining grounded in the mission of the church - to make disciples of all men. The torch was passed from the outgoing pastor, Michael Junior, who was instrumental in the planning stages just before his reassignment. However, this is an affirmation that the journey of the congregation isn't linear, but a continuum. The new pastor, carrying the torch, is not replacing but inheriting.

What is your sign? The significance of this question deepens within the setting of a spiritual community. The new sign for the church is more than just a way to identify it; it also symbolizes commitment, unity, and the never-ending process of change. It represents a journey where walls, like individuals, are renewed and where leaders and members work together to usher in new chapters while valuing the experiences of the past. This question, imbued with a sense of shared purpose and hope, guides us not to the skies, but to the heart of human connection, dedication, and the ever-evolving journey of the soul.
To the members, this is our church, and this is our sign.
