Idyllically placed on a hill, The Florence Hill Church, one of the oldest Seventh-day Adventist churches in Jamaica has stood as a beacon of hope to neighbouring and extended communities for one hundred and eleven (111) years! Nestled in the cool hills of Saint Andrew, the Church has its history rooted in the indomitable spirit of the first pioneer - Peter Nooks, who accepted the Advent message in a time when it was not just unpopular, but unsafe.

Despite suffering great persecution, Nooks stood fervent in his resolve, the same of which took him on an onerous 18-mile journey by foot to North Street S.D.A. Church where he was baptized. But Nooks’ walk, both physically and spiritually would be a walk to remember! He has left footprints that have been etched for eternity. His witness saw the birth of the Florence Hill Church and many other SDA congregations in Saint Andrew.

Today, a congregation of approximately three hundred members, and Host Pastor, Robert Francis are resolved to finish the work of the gospel in all the world, by making an impact in their neck of the woods. As the church celebrated this incredible 111th milestone, the distinguished presence and words of the East Jamaica Conference President, Dr. Meric Walker were befitting. Walker who began on a congratulatory note, spoke to the church’s accomplishment, noting that it was God who had enabled its success. His message, titled, ‘Be strong’ was in tandem with the theme, “Hitherto hath the Lord Led Us: Energized by His Spirit”.

“God is with you”, Pastor Walker underscored, as he unpacked Joshua 1:9.

“He will never leave you” he added, “As we face another journey ahead, we must not lose hope”. Scores of congregants affirmed the President’s message with nodded heads, and words of amen.

Other conference officials such as, Pastor Alanzo White: Ministerial Secretary, EJC, Pastor Michael Lewis: Sabbath School and Personal Ministries Director, EJC, Elder Dane Ellis: Vice President, NCU; along with Sister Ruth- Ann Brown: Digital Media Coordinator, EJC joined the church in its commemorative service.  Sister churches such as Toms River, Peat Hill and Cavaliers, along with others offered words of greetings and acknowledgements.

Perhaps, however, what will be remembered as the highlight of the day is the baptismal service that culminated the divine worship. Happiness permeated the air, as family members celebrated with heaven, the baptism of their loved one. Truly, there could be no greater celebration than that of a sinner being saved by grace!

As the Church continues its quest of rescuing the perishing and energizing the remnant, we pray for God’s unprecedented favour and steadfast hand to lead His Church for the permissible years to come.
